The European Discovery of the Okanagan Valley
European explorers first came to the Okanagan Valley over two centuries ago, during the voyage of Captain James Cook who sailed down the west coast of North America in 1778. Those explorers were most likely unaware that their path would one day be followed by a host of winemakers, but they did see the area’s rich agricultural potential. After the initial exploration, the area was largely ignored by the rest of the British Empire, with the exception of a few missionaries who ventured into the area.

The same was true for the Americans for the first part of the 19th century, with the exception of a brief exploration by fur trappers. By the mid-19th century, however, the Okanagan had become a hotbed of agricultural activity, with a number of vineyards being established in the Kelowna and Westbank areas.

Gold Rush Days in Kelowna
The discovery of gold in the Okanagan Valley in the late 1890s triggered a gold rush that would last for 15 years. Kelowna and the rest of the Okanagan Valley swelled to become one of the most prosperous regions in Canada, with a population of some 20,000 people by the turn of the century. The boom was driven by the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1885 and the discovery of gold a short time later. The surge was short-lived, however, as miners soon turned their attention to the newer and richer deposits of the Yukon. By 1901, the city of Kelowna was home to around 2,000 people.

The Role of the Okanagan in World War II and Aftermath
Despite its small size, the Okanagan played a major role in the war effort. Many Canadians were stationed in the region to help build the world’s third largest naval base at Esquimalt on the west coast of British Columbia. Others worked for the war effort in manufacturing plants such as the Kelowna Car and Foundry that produced components for military vehicles and aircraft. The Okanagan also became a hub for Canadian troops bound for Europe. Many soldiers traveled through the Okanagan by train on their way to training camps in southern Ontario, with Kelowna being the destination for several trainloads of soldiers bound for the Second World War.

Community and Culture Today
The Okanagan is thriving today, with a strong and prosperous economy fueled by its status as a popular tourist destination. Kelowna is the largest city in the Okanagan and plays a central role in the region’s culture and tourism industry. The city hosts a wide range of festivals, art exhibitions, sporting events and other community events. The Okanagan region is also home to many cultural events, such as the Kelowna Festival of the Arts, the Okanagan Valley Wine Festival and the Okanagan Highland Games. The area has also become a hotbed for many innovative companies, with many tech startups emerging in the region.
